Claude Max: price, limits and Pro vs Max
official pricing and help pagescopy verified 2026-09-28
Claude Max costs $100 a month for 5× Pro usage or $200 for 20×, billed monthly only. The multiplier applies to the 5-hour session: Anthropic describes Max as 5× or 20× Pro’s per-session allowance. Max also has a weekly limit across all models, and Anthropic does not say that weekly limit grows by the same 5× or 20×. Models are the same as Pro; you are buying room, priority and Fable access.

What 5x and 20x actually scale
Anthropic’s help center describes Max 5x as five times, and Max 20x as twenty times, the Pro plan’s per-session usage allowance. The session is the same rolling 5-hour window Pro uses.
Max also has a weekly limit that applies across all models and resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. The official pages do not say that the weekly limit is 5× or 20× Pro. Some users report that moving from Max 5x to Max 20x raises their weekly room by less than the headline 4×. That is a user report, not an Anthropic figure.
Anthropic no longer publishes a fixed message count for any plan. How far a session goes depends on conversation length, model, tools and effort.
Which limit are you hitting?
Open Settings → Usage in Claude, or run /status in Claude Code, and note which bar runs out first over a week or two of normal work.
- The 5-hour session runs out while the weekly bar still has room: a bigger session is what Max sells. Max 5x is the first step.
- The weekly bar runs out: Max raises it too, but Anthropic does not publish by how much. Try Max 5x for a month before paying for 20x.
- You rarely hit either: stay on Pro. Max uses the same models and gives no quality boost.
- You only overflow now and then: usage credits bill the extra at standard API rates and may cost less than $80 a month more.
What the upgrade costs
- Pro → Max 5x: +$80 a month.
- Pro → Max 20x: +$180 a month.
- Max 5x → Max 20x: +$100 a month for 4× the session.
- On annual Pro you pay about $17 a month. Max has no annual option, so the monthly jump is larger than it looks.
Upgrading, downgrading and discounts
- Upgrading from Pro to Max, or from Max 5x to Max 20x, takes effect immediately and is charged on a prorated basis for the rest of the billing cycle.
- Anthropic does not document a mid-cycle downgrade. Cancelling keeps your plan until the end of the paid period.
- There is no standing discount, student price or Max trial. Anthropic says it occasionally runs limited-time promotions.
- Prices are for web subscriptions. Mobile app pricing can differ.
FAQ
How much is Claude Max?
Max 5x is $100 a month and Max 20x is $200 a month. Max is billed monthly only, and the prices are for web subscriptions; mobile pricing can differ.
Is Claude Max worth it?
It is worth it if you keep running out of the 5-hour session on Pro, because that is the limit Max multiplies. If you rarely hit a limit, Pro gives you the same models. If you overflow only occasionally, usage credits at API rates may cost less than the $80 a month step to Max 5x.
Does Claude Max have a 5-hour limit?
Yes. Max uses the same rolling 5-hour session as Pro, with 5× or 20× Pro’s per-session allowance, plus a weekly limit across all models. Settings → Usage shows both reset times.
Is Claude Max 20x really 20 times Pro?
For the 5-hour session, yes: Anthropic describes Max 20x as 20 times Pro’s per-session allowance. Anthropic does not say the weekly limit is 20 times Pro, and some users report a smaller weekly gain.
Should I get Max 5x or Max 20x?
Start with Max 5x unless you already run out of it. Max 20x costs $100 more for 4× the session size, and Anthropic does not publish how much larger its weekly limit is.
Can I upgrade from Max 5x to Max 20x?
Yes. Upgrading to a higher tier takes effect immediately and is charged on a prorated basis for the rest of your billing cycle. Anthropic does not document a mid-cycle downgrade.
Is there a Claude Max discount or annual plan?
No. Max is monthly only, and Anthropic says it does not offer standard discounted pricing on paid plans, including Max. It occasionally runs limited-time promotions.
What is the difference between Claude Pro and Max?
Pro is $20 a month; Max is $100 or $200. Max gives 5× or 20× Pro’s per-session usage, higher output limits, priority at busy times, early feature access, and Fable within up to half the weekly limit. The models and Claude Code are the same.
