Codex has no separate price. It comes with a ChatGPT plan: Plus is $20 a month, Pro starts at $100 for 5× Plus usage, and Pro $200 gives 20× Plus but is closed to new sign-ups. Codex and ChatGPT Work draw from one allowance with a 5-hour window and a weekly window, and you need room in both to keep going.
Codex, ChatGPT Work, ChatGPT for Excel and Workspace Agents share one allowance on the same ChatGPT login.
The 5-hour window starts with your first message after the previous window ends. The weekly window caps total work. You need allowance left in both.
OpenAI publishes 5-hour ranges per model, not a hard message cap. Local messages and cloud tasks spend the same allowance.
Switching to a cheaper model makes the allowance last longer, but it does not refill a limit you already hit.
Banked resets are saved in Settings → Usage until you redeem them or they expire. Global resets apply on their own and are not saved.

How much does Codex cost?
Codex is included in ChatGPT plans rather than sold on its own. Free and Go ($8 a month) include a small allowance, Plus is $20 a month, Pro $100 gives 5× Plus usage, and Pro $200 gives 20× Plus. Business and Enterprise plans also include it.
Plus gets expanded Codex usage on a 5-hour window plus a weekly window. OpenAI publishes a 5-hour range per model instead of a fixed count: for example, about 5–45 local messages on GPT-6 Astra and 10–100 on GPT-5.6 Sol. How far a range goes depends on task size.
The 5-hour window reopens five hours after it starts, and the weekly window resets on the date shown in Settings → Usage (or /status in the CLI). OpenAI support does not reset limits by request. Your options are to wait, use a saved reset, buy credits, or upgrade.
A banked reset is a one-time refresh saved to your account. Redeeming it in Settings → Usage refills both the 5-hour and weekly windows and moves your weekly reset date. It is not purchased credit, it does not raise your plan limit, and once it expires it cannot be reissued.
Settings → Usage shows which window you hit and when it reopens. Eligible Plus and Pro users can add credits to keep working without changing plans. Credits pay for extra usage but do not unlock models your plan lacks.
